Goldin Auction - Shohei Ohtani

Joseph Kraham

The eye appeal contained within this offered piece cannot be denied or ignored, as celebrated artist Joseph Kraham, inspired by the 2024 World Series, created this singular (#1/1) lifelike homage to Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani using painted LEGO bricks.

Kraham, who has a background in engineering, first married his love of LEGO and art when he created a piece celebrating the life of his adored Great Dane that tragically passed away in 2014. Kraham's pieces, highly coveted for their rich detail, take 10 hours per square foot to create. Due to the time and painstaking detail, Kraham produces roughly 10 pieces a year–all unique. During his decade of using LEGO as his medium, Kraham has used a whopping two million pieces in his art.

This piece, measuring 52-by-52-inches, features 23,000 painted LEGO pieces, creating a visually stunning portrait of Ohtani at the plate, inspired by the 2024 World Series. Lest we forget, Ohtani became the only player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases during a season, which led to Ohtani being named as the unanimous NL MVP, as well as earning the first World Series title of his illustrious career. This breathtaking piece featuring Ohtani's near stoic batting face in such detail that it feels absolutely photographic and real, is signed by the artist in marker on the back, with Kraham adding "Shohei Ohtani," and "2024." As Kraham's work is resplendent and limited in output, this piece featuring a future Hall of Famer whose name is spoken in the same breath as the great Babe Ruth makes the ultimate display piece in any serious collection.
